Vedism today is predominately a revival movement and reconstructionist religion studied and practiced by those who believe in the true and literal authority of the Vedas (SaÆhit¡). The Caturveda are a collection of hymns and rituals that include the Îgveda, Yajurveda, S¡maveda and Atharvaveda - the Îgveda being the oldest religious text understood and used today.
While most Hindus believe in the Divine origin of these ancient works, many do not follow the practices found in the Vedas (SaÆhit¡) itself. Instead, the Vedas are a foundation and an inspiration for the various Hindu paths and are interpreted through other works, such as the UpaniÀads, Pur¡¸as, Itih¡sas and other religion-specific texts. The living culture and tradition is what gives the Hindu religions unique beauty and robust vitality.
Vedism, however, is a religion solely devoted to the word and spirit of the Vedas (SaÆhit¡), without undue interpretation from later texts. Historically referred to as "Brahminism," Vedism is the culture and practice described in the Vedas (SaÆhit¡).
It is the aim of the modern Vedic to resurrect the ancient Vedic mythologies and practices and apply them to the modern world. Adapting Vedic principles and rituals to contemporary needs and technology is essential to fortifying the legacy of the Vedas, which will ensure the survival of Vedic ideals for generations to come.
